The Tabernacle

The Tabernacle was begun in 1863 and essentially
completed in 1867, but finishing continued until 1875. It
is 250 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 80 high. The
domed roof, designed by bridge builder Henry Grow, is
a great bridgework of latticed wooden arches secured with
large wooden dowels and rawhide. The original wooden
shingles of the roof were replaced by sheet tin, and later
by aluminum. The famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir
broadcasts originate here. Free concerts are played daily
on the Tabernacle organ, considered one of the finest such
instruments anywhere. The building is noted for its
remarkable acoustical properties.
