Past Ages
Few places in the world afford a better opportunity
to visualize the power and persistence of the forces
that have shaped the surface of the earth. It took
mother nature more than 100 million years to deposit
the nine geologic formations which you see as you
travel through this canyon known as North Wash. It
has taken almost another 100 million years for the
erosive force of water to cut this deep canyon.
You are standing on the Wingate Sandstone Formation.
The thin-bedded, brownish-red formation overlaying
the Winaged is Kayenta. About 180 million years ago
a migrating inland sea left deposits to form this
sandstone.
