About Tropic
Tropic is nestled against the hills at the edge of Tropic Valley. Green fields cover the small valley, while the surrounding hills are dotted with juniper trees, sagebrush, and rocky outcroppings. In the distance the flat tops of mesas line the horizon. Bryce Canyon National Park is located in the mountains just west of Tropic. In spite of the popular National Park nearby, Tropic remains a rustic ranching town.
Tropic was settled in 1892 by Mormon pioneers who came from Panguitch. It received its name on account of the milder climate they found here, although it hardly classes as tropical. The elevation is quite high, 6,300 feet. The population as of the year 2000 was 508.
Tropic is surrounded by fantastic scenery. The mountains around it are covered in alpine forests, and the valleys in meadows and farmland. The fantastic cream-colored rock formations of Bryce Canyon are just to the west, and to the east is a rugged terrain of cliffs and box canyons. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument includes much of the land to the east and south. The Colorado River is not far to the east, where it flows through Lake Powell. State Highway 12 passes through Tropic, and leads east to Escalante, and west to the Bryce Canyon and U.S. Highway 89.
