Living/Non-living
Connections

It seems as if the wind is always
blowing here! Would the wind
have any effect on the plants
and animals who live here?
The answer is yes. Notice that
the plants that face the canyon
to the west are bushy and close
to the ground. Because the wind
often blows, the temperature
can be much lower and the
ground much drier.

Some of the trees on the hilltops
are limberpine. Has the wind
affected their shapes?

FOOTNOTE Answer:
Black bears have been known to den in cavities
in or under snags, which are insulated by the
surrounding wood or sod!
