About Plymouth

Plymouth is a rural community in northern Utah near the Idaho border. Clarkston Mountain sits behind the town, capped by Gunsight Peak at 8,244 feet, from which point the mountain slopes drop steeply on the west and south sides, and Plymouth sits right at its feet. To the south lies a broad valley named the Bear River Valley, after the Bear River which passes through a gap in the mountains several miles east of Plymouth. The Malad River also passes by Plymouth on the west, flowing out of the Malad River Valley which opens into the Bear River Valley right next to Plymouth. The valleys are filled with farmland and grassland and the mountain behind is rocky and tree-covered. Plymouth is high enough to command a grand view of the area to the south.

The population of Plymouth was 414 at the 2010 census, which included a significant increase from 10 years previous. The growth of cities along the Wasatch Front, reaching this far north, has brought in young families with children, keeping the community vibrant. The town is named after Plymouth Rock where the Pilgrims landed in Connecticut. The elevation ranges from 4,400 to 4,600 feet.

Interstate 15 passes a few miles west of Plymouth. Before the interstate was built, U.S. Highway 191 was the main route of travel, and it passed right through Plymouth. The section from Plymouth southward is designated Utah Highway 13 now, and it leads to Riverside and other communities in the Bear River Valley. The old alignment of Highway 191 also extends northward from Plymouth, although some portions are no longer even paved. Passing into Idaho, it comes to Malad.
